Considerations When Choosing the Wheelbarrow

With planting season approaching, it's time to take a warehouse inventory: what do you have and what do you need to stock up on? Act now to make sure you have the right equipment to turn your winter garden plans into a spring reality.

Wheelbarrows are a must-have gardening item in a yard—gardeners use them for a variety of tasks, including carrying loads of mulch, moving bricks, transplanting shrubs, and even composting. A good wheelbarrow can easily triple or quadruple the number of things you move right next to you. Trolleys have always provided such advantages. Many gardening chores would be impossible without a wheelbarrow, so what issues should you pay the most attention to when choosing a wheelbarrow?

Material

There are still some old wooden wheelbarrow models, but in most cases, wheelbarrow barrels are now made of steel or plastic.

Steel structures are common and can handle loads of varying weights. However, this material tends to rust, so be careful to store the wheelbarrow in a dry place.

Plastic construction is best for light gardening. While it won't rust, the plastic can crack under the weight of heavy objects or in extreme cold.

Volume

Cargo volume refers to how much space you can fill in your cart. Most carts average about 10 square feet of material.

Volume is an important factor to consider. Most people only look at the weight a wheelbarrow can carry, but if your wheelbarrow can't hold 1,200 lbs worth of material, it doesn't matter if your wheelbarrow can carry 1,200 lbs! Doing some thinking and planning what you will be putting in your cart on a regular basis will affect the size you need to buy.

The Bucket

Steel wheelbarrow buckets can bear heavier weight, but they will rust and be heavier to handle. Steel wheelbarrows are used for heavy tasks, such as moving rocks, bricks or large plants.

Plastic wheelbarrow buckets are lighter and generally cheaper than steel, but they can break due to excessive weight, extreme temperature fluctuations, or improper handling. Plastic wheelbarrows are used to move mulch, compost, garden waste and smaller plants.

The Handle

Having the right handle means that hours and hours of repetitive tasks can be completed more easily without being so troublesome.

In gardening, the work you need to do may include flipping, tilting, and dumping. A straight handle can do all of this, but it may require more hand power. The straight handle allows you to steer the wheelbarrow and dump items easily.

One advantage of wooden carts is that the handles will not get hot in the summer. And the special wooden handle is more comfortable to use, but the wooden handle may crack and chip due to exposure to too much weather.

Steel wheelbarrow handles provide a higher level of strength and durability. If the wheelbarrow is dropped, the wooden handle will break on impact, but the steel handle is unlikely. Most importantly, you can get galvanized steel handles because they are more rust-resistant than powder-coated type wheelbarrow handles. But this kind of metal handle becomes very hot when exposed to the sun for a long time.

The Wheel

Single wheel wheelbarrows are the most common. It is easy to maneuver and is very suitable for sharp turns and small spaces. This type of wheelbarrow is very suitable for lighter loads and is very suitable for moving the waste from small lawns such as weeding, trimming and mowing.

In comparison, a two-wheeled wheelbarrow can provide more stability. But their biggest disadvantage is that they don't get so much mobility.

Pneumatic or non-pneumatic?

Pneumatic unicycle tires have an inner tube that you can inflate like a sub-bike or car tire. This air acts as a shock absorber, making the wheelbarrow ride smoother and easier to manage. But like all-tube tires, pneumatic unicycle tires are susceptible to rough terrain and can burst. Also, you need to pay attention to the tire pressure as it will eventually deflate without maintenance.

Non-pneumatic tires are solid rubber. He can't pop or flat, but they won't ride as smoothly. The compromise comes in the form of a semi-pneumatic tire - a rubber tire with built-in air pockets. This intermediate type provides some shock absorption but does not require inflation.
